Sit down. Sit still and upright. Close your eyes lightly. Sit relaxed but alert. Silently, interiorly begin to say your short prayer phrase (mantra). Recite it rhythmically. Listen to it as you say it, gently but continuously. Do not think or imagine anything – spiritual or otherwise. If thoughts or images come, these are distractions at the time of meditation, so keep returning to simply saying your prayer phrase. Meditate each morning and evening for between twenty and thirty minutes.
The aim is to experience the interior reality of the person of the Divine and let it transform us. The process is- silence and stillness externally; repeat the mantra- and let everything else go- from the profane to the sacred. Thereby we begin accept the greatest gift given to us-our being, simply that we are. As we learn how to be, we become content, and our doing itself is radically purified and transformed. Clarity arises and joy is born.
The aim expressed above is a call from and to the roots of our being-the Divine. It is an absolute call but it allows for a progressive turning, a bit at a time. As we turn more towards the Divine, we understand the reality of transformation a bit more, and this gives us the strength to turn more towards the Divine.
How long does it take? When will it happen? These questions arise because we haven’t really understood ….the answer is that it takes no time and it has already happened. In a real sense we decide how long it will take; when we commit ourselves to the simplicity of that Spirit, of that Truth. Becoming simple means becoming centered no longer in ourselves but in Him. Learning to say the mantra simply means to take the attention off ourselves, to let go of everything and rest in the Divine…..time then becomes eternity.
No space for thoughts or feelings to decide whether we will do the process or not or interfere with the process. Just do it as above…we undergo renewal. Remain calm in the face of all distraction and say the mantra…it will do its work. Don’t be concerned with your imperfections or hopes for perfection… the mantra will help you discover who you are.
Learn to live each moment consecrated to the Divine. Once we do this even to a little extent, we realize That Love a little and we go further …and realise the harmonious unity behind everything. We learn how to love and be loved. We learn to leave needs behind and understand how we are poor without That and how That makes us truly rich. We learn that the journey and goal are the same.
Doing the process requires certain qualities- humility to do something simple, trust till u begin to experience, courage and perseverance. We meet the self from which we have isolated ourselves, understand that happiness is possible, start to revere life and realize the true nature of love and power.
Choosing your mantra is important. It is best done in consultation with a teacher. If you have no teacher to help you, you should choose one that has been hallowed by Divine tradition. Once you accept a mantra, it is a gift that has been given to you and now you should give yourself to it- by remaining faithful to the process. The process is born from tradition, built on faith and leads us to the depths of our being , the Divine.
Mantra For Wisdom
Gayatri mantra: To develop intelligence, knowledge and wisdom, and to expand the consciousness. Perception and attention are sharpened, retention and memory power are enhanced, and there is growth in intelligence. In order to develop awareness, wisdom and understanding, chant the Gayatri mantra twenty-four times every day.
We contemplate the glory of Light illuminating the three worlds: gross, subtle, and causal.
I am that vivifying power, love, radiant illumination, and divine grace of universal intelligence.
We pray for the divine light to illumine our minds.
